Upon arrival you will be asked to to read and fill a few forms. Once this is done I will spend the necessary time exploring your problem(s) by asking you a lot of questions about your problem itself but also about any other health issues you may have or had in the past as well as your life in general. Some of these questions may not seem relevant, but they will help me to build a full picture of your problem. I will record the information you provide me.
Following the case history, I will carry out a physical examination from head to toe. In order for me to carry this latter thoroughly I will ask you to undress to your underwear. Consequently wear suitable, modest clothes in which you feel comfortable. A pair of loose shorts may be worn if you wish.
This is necessary because this enables me to see how the problem is affecting the whole of your body, and what affect your posture has on your condition. Clothes also change the outcome of the tests performed during the examination and consequently can lead to a wrong diagnosis. Certain treatments can also not be performed if you’ve got clothes. I will cover you with a towel as much as possible.
However if for any reasons you do not want to undress down your underwear, just tell me so and I will do with the clothes. I want you to feel comfortable throughout the consultation so always tell me what you want and don’t want. I will always ask you what I would like you to do and explain to you what I am going to do beforehand and ask for your consent. If you do not want me to do something I am asking you to do or do not want me to do a certain test or use a certain type of treatments simply tell me!
My examination will consist grossly of some or all of the following according to what type of therapy you have opted for:
– Observation of your posture in a standing position from the front, back and sides.
– Palpation of various and multiple areas of your body including the symptomatic area.
– You will be asked to perform a simple series of movements so that the mobility of your body can be evaluated.
– Evaluation of the mobility, range and quality of movement of joints, organs and other tissues by passively introducing movement into the body while palpating the structure(s) in question or by other type of manoeuvres. You will usually be asked to do some simple movements, again so we can assess how your problem is effecting you, but only if these do not cause you too much discomfort.
– Assessment of your pulses at the wrists
– Assessment of your blood oxygen saturation using a device
– Assessment of your mouth, teeth and tongue
– Assessment of the strength of some muscles
– Assessment of reflexes, sensation..etc
Based on the case history and examination findings, a diagnosis will be formulated and a treatment plan developed. These will be discussed with you and, if you are agreeable and time permits, treatment will begin on your first visit. If for any reason treatment from me is not appropriate, you will be referred to your GP or alternative specialist for further consultation.
You should feel free to ask questions about your diagnosis and treatment plan at any time.
